Saturday, April 5
3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Party Animals - Mutt Strut and Fashion Show

Get ready for Party Animals, a new dog-friendly social mixer event at the Arboretum for adults. More fun than hanging out at the dog park, dogs on leashes and their owners are invited to join other nature and canine lovers for refreshments and music in the meadow, weather permitting.

The host in April for The Mutt Strutt is Sunshine, a friendly boxer, who will be there to greet everyone with a complimentary sniff. Dog owners can enjoy music, refreshments and receive a doggie bag with a treat for their favorite canine.

Gone to the Dogs…and the Cat Too will host a doggie fashion show, where some of the best dressed pups will strut the dogwalk in couture fashions. Prizes will be awarded to the best-dressed dogs in attendance. Cost is $8 per person for members, $10 for non-members.

Join Naturalist Lucien Bouffard for a guided walk on the Arboretum trails to look for birds during the spring migration season. This is a great way to improve your birding skills, meet other birders and enjoy some time in nature. Bring your binoculars and field guides. Walks will be offered every Tuesday and Friday at 2 p.m. and every Thursday and Saturday at 6:45 a.m. through April 29. No registration required.
Free for Arboretum members; $5 for non-members

7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Birding - Beyond the Basics
Join Bill Eley, program development director at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, for a class to expand your knowledge of birds of our area and learn how to distinguish between more challenging birds to identify such as shorebirds, and gulls and terns. The course consists of two evening classes and a field trip to the migratory shorebird sanctuary at Bolivar Flats.
Cost is $40 for members, $50 for non-members. Pre-registration is required. Field trip on Saturday, April 26.

Breakfast with the Birds
Enjoy the beauty of the Arboretum trails with early morning bird walk guided by  Luc Bouffard, Arboretum naturalist and bird specialist. A delicioius, healthy breakfast will be provided by Whole Foods making it the perfect way to start our Earth Day Celebration. Registration required, space is limited. Free for members, $10 for non-members.

Earth Day Celebration
Bring the family out to enjoy Earth Day at the Arboretum. Learn about earth-friendly products from local companies and organizations. The Houston Arboretum has teamed up with Gulf Coast Recycling and Avangard Innovative in celebration of Earth Day. Drop off dirt-free, stacked and unbagged plastic garden pots and trays at the Arboretum for recycling during the month of April. Arboretum grounds are open 7 days a week. Spread the word and help keep thousands of pots out of the landfill by recycling them at the Arboretum.

1:00 - 5:00 p.m. Buffalo Bayou Canoe Trip
Spend the afternoon in a canoe on Buffalo Bayou and explore its natural history. This stretch of bayou flows between I-610 and Shepherd Drive, one of the wildest portions of the bayou, includes the Arboretum and Memorial Park. The trip will be preceded by a mandatory orientation at the Arboretum on Thursday evening, April 17. This outdoor class is one in a series of trips sponsored by the Arboretum and Whitewater Experience founder Don Greene. While canoeing experience is not necessary, a desire to learn definitely is. Wildflowers of the Upper Texas Coast (Part 1)
The Upper Texas Coast is a transition zone where eastern forests, coastal prairie and marsh, and beach ecosystems converge. Within these different ecosystems grow an amazing diversity of botanically interesting and attractive wildflowers. This course will include identification tips and techniques, landscaping applications, and historical uses. Cost is $95 for members, $105 for non-members. Pre-registration is required.

Talk with Chef Monica Pope
Chef Monica Pope is a leader in the garden-to-table movement among American chefs and is one of the founders on the Midtown Farmers Market. Hear her speak about her support of local farmers, ranchers and food producers and how that has formed the heart and soul of her restaurant t'afia. Enjoy a sampling of fresh treats from the t'afia kitchen.
