Like a tiny pine seed, the Arbor Day we know today grew from an idea one man had to celebrate the usefulness of trees by planting more of them. Houston area families are invited to celebrate Arbor Day at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center on Saturday, January 28, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. "Nature Awaits!" is this year's theme. There will be many events and hands-on activities for everyone in the family to see and do:

Ongoing Activities:

  • Johnny Appleseed will hand out acorns
  • HANC the Owl will give away pine
    seedlings
  • Native Tree and Shrub Sale
  • Make recycled paper and designer
    paper hats
  • Members only reception featuring live
    owls and free refreshments
  • Discounted membership drive with free gifts
  • Nature Playground featuring many fun children's areas
  • Pine cone bird feeders to take home.

Scheduled Activities:

10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Members-only room:Live Owls
11 a.m. & 1 p.m. * Storytelling: "The Man Who Planted Trees"
11:30 a.m. & 2 p.m. *Tree Planting Demonstrations

Tree seedlings: One bundle free for Arboretum members
$6 per bundle for non-members.
Each bundle contains 2 of the same species.

4 Tree species:

  • Ironwood (Carpinus caroliniana)
  • Water Hickory (Carya aquatica)
  • Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida)
  • Loblolly Pine (Pinus taeda)

3 Shrub species

  • Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis)
  • Spicebush (Lindera benzoin)
  • Southern Waxmyrtle (Morella cerifera)
