Nature Trekkers Summer Camp - "Living on the Edge – Endangered Species"
Have you ever seen a Red Wolf, a Texas Horned Lizard, a Houston Toad or a White-nosed Coati? These animals are all native to Texas, yet seldom seen because they are either endangered or threatened species. Learn about the rarest of Texas animals and the reasons for their rarity through games, educational crafts and outside activities. Cost is $230 for members, $270 for non-members. Want a shorter day? Explore Buffalo Bayou by Canoe
Spend the afternoon in a canoe on Buffalo Bayou and explore its natural history. This stretch of bayou flows between I-610 and Shepherd Drive, one of the wildest portions of the bayou, and i ncludes the Arboretum and Memorial Park. The trip will be preceded by a mandatory orientation at the Arboretum on Thursday evening prior to the trip. This outdoor class is one of a series of trips sponsored by the Arboretum and Whitewater Experience founder Don Greene. While canoeing experience is not necessary, a desire to learn definitely is. The natural history of the bayou, including erosion issues, geology, plants, birds and mammals, will be explored in-depth. Cost is $85 for members, $95 for non-members. Appalachian Basket Weaving
Since the early 1900's, rural residents of the mountains of Appalachia have woven intricate baskets for carrying items such as eggs, cotton, and herbs. These beautiful and durable baskets are now prized by collectors and museums. Master basket weaver Kathy Chang will lead this hands-on workshop which will guide the student through the process of making an antique drying basket. Suggestions for participating in this hands-on workshop: dress casually, bring a sack lunch, and prepare for a fun, challenging workshop! Cost is $55 for members, $75 for non-members. Chinese Brush Painting
Learn and improve your watercolor painting skills in a relaxed and enjoyable setting. This class will cover a wide variety of brushstrokes and techniques. Through step by step instruction, students will create their own watercolor painting. Each technique will be demonstrated by the instructor, Peihong Dong, one of China's most well -known artists. Students will receive individual attention adapted to their particular skill level and interests. Beginners are welcome! Cost is $95 for members, $125 for non-members.
