Appalachian Basket Weaving - August 22, 2008 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Since the early 1900's, rural residents of the mountains of Appalachia have woven intricate baskets for carrying items such as eggs, cotton, and herbs. These beautiful and durable baskets are now prized by collectors and museums.

Master basket weaver Kathy Chang will lead this hands-on workshop which will guide the student through the process of making the antique drying basket pictured.

Suggestions for participating in this hands-on workship: dress casually, bring a sack lunch, and prepare for a fun, challenging workshop!

Instructor: Kathy Chang was born in Taiwan and moved to Tennessee about 20 years ago. She became fascinated by the baskets at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, TN and began taking basket weaving lessons. "I was amazed, because Taiwan is very industrialized, so you never see anybody making crafts," Chang says "I couldn't get enough of it."
