The Ins & Outs of Building Birdhouses

A surprising number of birds will use bird houses for nesting and roosting (sleeping) if they are available. In this class we will learn which local birds could be attracted to a bird house that we build. Some of these include Red-bellied and Downy Woodpeckers, Eastern Screech and Barn Owls, bluebirds, chickadees, and Purple Martins.

We will select a couple of bird species to build houses for and then build our own. This is not complicated and can be done with simple hand tools and one short board. Everyone will receive drawings and instructions to take home to build different bird houses.

The instructor will demonstrate the construction of a
one-board birdhouse. The student may bring a hand saw, hammer, and nails and build a house along with the instructor.
