Naturalist Explorers

Naturalist Explorers classes introduce children ages 5 to 8 to environmental and natural history topics in a fun and enthusiastic atmosphere.

Classes include a short introduction inside followed by hands-on, engaging activities outside. Parents are welcome to participate with their child or drop them off.

All classes include a short introduction inside followed by outdoor activities. Children should come dressed for the weather, wear closed toe shoes, and bring a snack and water. Classes are offered one Saturday each month from August to May.

  • Advanced reservation required. Register online or by mail or fax (713-682-2539). Payment must be included at time of registration.
  • Registration deadline is the Wednesday prior to each class; confirmation will be mailed or emailed to you.
  • Cost (per child/per class): $15 for members (Family Tree or above); $30 for non-members.
  • Series Discount: Register for all 4 classes before September 10 and save!: $50 for members; $100 for non-members.
  • Cancellation policy: You must notify us of your cancellation in writing via fax (713-682-2539) or email no later than 10 days prior to class to receive a 50% refund. No refunds are issued within 10 days of class.

Find Your Way: Map Skills
It's no fun getting lost. Learn to read a map and use a compass with hands- on activities. We will go on a treasure hunt to practice our new skills.

Camping 101
Camping is loads of fun. Come and learn all about it through games and hands-on demonstrations. You will even get to try your hand at setting up a tent.

Mixin' and Fixin' Outdoor Treats
Eating a meal you cooked yourself outdoors is very tasty. Explore different ways to prepare food in nature and eat what you make. Learn how to safely build a camp fire as well!

Happy Hiking
Hiking is a great way to get outside and discover nature. Learn about the right gear to bring and how to keep safe on the trails. We'll then pack some supplies and go on our own hike in the Arboretum!
