Health + Wellness:

Practical Emergency Preparedness

Do you know what to do in case of flooding, hurricane, house fire, or hazardous chemical spill? Being prepard does not mean being ready to fight off mutant zombie bikers in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, it means having the right tools, knowledge and mindset to get you and your family through a non-ordinary day. Learn practical emergency preparedness for the Houston area with Dr. Mark Vorderbruggen, recently profiled in the Popular Mechanics magazine on emergency preparedness. He will teach you how to easily and inexpensively get ready for disasters big and small.

Topics will include:

  • Threat identificiation: what should you realistically worry about
  • Basic preparation: food, water, first aid kit, checklists
  • Evacuation: what to always have pre-packed, what not to forget
  • Long power outages: lighting, cooking, hygiene, food, safety, communications
  • Car kits: what you should always have in your car
  • "It takes a village...": why you should help your neighbors prepare too
  • Sources to get more information

He also teaches the Arboretum's Edible Wild Plants class.
