Tree Care and the Environment - Myths, Philosophies, History and Science
Right tree/Right place has been the rallying cry of the urban and community forestry movement for many years. But the definitions of these terms mean different things to different people. In the first two sessions of this class, students will explore many of the current and historical myths and philosophies relating to tree care and the environment.
We will also look briefly at the history of arboriculture and urban forestry, study pruning practices and the basic biology of woody plants, and learn just what this stuff is that we call "soil". In the final Saturday session, discuss how urban forests can be better designed and managed to reduce problems caused by well-intentioned but inappropriate tree selection, planting techniques, and maintenance problems.
Instructor: Phil Coker is an ISA certified arborist with over 30 years experience working with trees and the environment.
