Understanding Plants
Plants go about their lives quietly around us, but how much do we really know about them? In this course, we will be exploring the lives of plants: their growth, their interactions, with each other and with other things in their environments, and their importance in our lives.
We will also learn the answers to some questions such as: Why some plants need pruning in different seasons, Why some seeds sprout right away while others are so difficult to get started, and Why some plants grow better or worse near certain other plants.
Topics will include:
- Basic plant anatomy
- Germination and growth requirements
- Reproduction
- Plant survival strategies
- Invasive species and Citizen science
Instructor: Maggie Honig has a varied background which includes an internship with the Smithsonian Institution botany department, two seasons as a biological technician at Glacier National Park studying the recovery of plants following a forest fire, and 14 years teaching science, both in the classroom and at nature centers. She has gardened in the Houston area since 1994 and has been an avid nature watcher her entire life.
